First Installment of my Saharan Adventure

Last Tuesday, October 8th, I took the train from Rabat to Marrakech, arriving there four hours later.

And guess what?  There's a McDonald's right beside the train station.  Clearly, they're everywhere.  It's the address I give when I want to go to Joe's office:  McDo Agdal, Agdal being the neighborhood.

I spent the night at the Ibis Hotel, conveniently located right next to the train station.  No chance of getting lost, unlike the other way when I was on my way to the dentist.  Fortunately, with my smattering of French, I was able to ask directions.

A lovely garden where I enjoyed fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Just to prove I was there.

Bright and early the next morning, I was picked up by Said, the driver from Desert Majesty tours http://www.desertmajesty.com/gen/tours/tours-morocco.html  There were also two English women along for the ride.

We spent most of the day driving through the Atlas Mountains.  Spectacular scenery.  Switchback roads.

And Morocco has the world market cornered on rocks.  They grow even more than New England.

We stopped in Ouarzazate at the Desert Majesty offices for tea and cookies.  We then stopped at a Women’s Co-operative where they produce Argan oil.  Morocco is the only place in the world where argan trees nuts grow.  Much of it is produced by hand.  Using a stone, the women break off the husks, then crack open the nut shell, remove the nutmeat, and finally grind the nuts in a kind of mortar and pestle to extract the oil.  I way overspent my Argan oil budget, but will have beeaautiful skin.

Then lunch, a delicious Moroccan salad and chicken tajine.

Finally, on to Zagora.  And the camel ride.  More about that next time.

Insha’Allah.

A Bit of Sightseeing

Saturday while one girl was a pottery class, Pappa, pottery girl’s sister and I did a bit of sightseeing.  We visited the mausoleum of King Hassan II, father of the present king, Mohammed VI.

Very impressive.

Back in Morocco

So I left the States on Monday.  The flight was uneventful.  Well, except for the delay leaving Paris.  Apparently there was excess luggage--the kind that’s loaded on without someone to claim it at the other end.  Frankly, that’s the kind of delay I appreciate.

I arrived here yesterday.  Because both Leila and Joe were working, Joe had a driver come to the airport to pick me up.  The kind who holds up a sign just for you.  Not just family but my own driver.  I felt very special, I can tell you.

Two very grown-up girls greeted me, excited to see me--and the presents.  We had lots of fun doing workbooks and playing with girly Legos.

Off to school

And there’s a new member of the family.  Meet Zorro.  Very aptly named, I think.  Handsome and dressed in black.

Helps me not miss my doggies.

And now Rachma has just brought me Morrocain tea--lots of mint and sugar and served in a juice-sized glass.

The sun is shining.  It’s warm.  And in 5 days I leave for my Saharan adventure.  Life is excellent!!

Toni V. Sweeney visits today

Bringing an Old Manuscript into A New Century.

’Way back in the late Eighties, I wrote a novel called The Rose and the Dragon. Medieval-sounding, I know, and I’m certain some were disappointed if they bought it without reading the blurb, then discovered that while there was a rose and a dragon in the story, they were merely part of a design cut into the hero’s shoulder.  Neither the plot nor the characters had anything knightly about them, either.  When it was accepted by Class Act Books for re-issue, I found that a lot of things needed to be changed.  My writing technique had improved greatly since the story was written so the first thing I did was go through the story and add and delete, re-arrange and tweak. Then I explained more about certain sections, and—I hope—making it an even better story.

At the time it was written, computers were huge, clunky objects with massive towers and bulky terminals, cell phones—for those who could afford them—were almost as big as those old army walkie-talkies, Smart Bombs had just come into use. Because this was a futuristic story, my aliens were the possessors of computers which were really desktop—they were embedded in, and part of, the desk instead of sitting on it.  Their cell phones are small handhelds, which not only transmit audio but also images (Can you say Smart Phone?)  Their missiles are programmed to seek out a target with a specific DNA, and they’ve discovered cold lasers.  I made up that last item, not knowing that real scientists were at that moment attempting to do the very same thing.

Now, the story needed updating.  No longer could my heroine appear awe-struck as the small object on her boss’ desk began buzzing and when picked up, an image appears demanding to speak to him.  There was definitely a whole lotta re-writing goin’ on!

The characters themselves didn’t need so much revision as remodeling. Miranda was still slightly naïve but plucky and a little more up-to-date in her observations, her boss, Dominic Andrus was still droolworthy and GQ metrosexual-ish, as was his son Niki.  The fourth character, but the most important to Miranda, the one I needed to work on, as well as his relationship to her. That was Dom’s younger brother with the highly unusual name of Kitten…

What to say about Kitten Andrus?

Well…he’s a good father, if not the best husband-material, though that’s not his fault.  The multi-married Kit has the misfortune to attract women who are social-climbers.  They leave him as soon as they discover life with a younger Andrus isn’t as glamorous as life with the head of the family would be.  The fact that Kit has a habit of getting his wife pregnant the first time they sleep together doesn’t help, either.  As a result, at the time he meets Miranda, Kit has been married seven times and has eight children, and he’s not looking for Mrs. Kitten Andrus Number Eight.  In fact, he’s decided never to marry again and he’s also had himself sterilized…just in case his oath to himself is sideswiped and he gets tempted by another pretty face.  Nevertheless, he likes the way the little alien nanny looks as well as the way she accepts things, so it appears there may soon be another applicant for lady of the house, and a reversal of a certain procedure.

I really had to work on Kit because, unlike Dom, who’s fairly upfront about things, baby brother hides his feelings, broods over them, and never speaks about what’s important.  He’s attracted to Miranda—yes—and she to him, but because his last wife died in childbirth, he’s determined never to be the cause of losing another woman he loves, or—as he considers it—killing her by having her bear his child.  Miranda thinks Kit runs hot and cold and he drives her to distraction because of this.  He has other secrets, too, and a very dangerous position in his brother’s household. The continual risk of being killed makes him hesitant to tell Miranda how he feels.  And then there’s that damned Isolationist Edict the Empire has, forbidding contact with any world outside their own system, and that definitely includes marriage with an alien.  Kit and Miranda not only have his past fighting them but the entire Empire also.

The Rose and the Dragon was fun to write because it was a kind of “duck out of water” story…taking a person out of her own environment and placing her in one where she’s the foreigner, the alien, and having her learn to adjust.  Miranda does just that because she loves the people she’s involved with…the three children for whom she’s a nanny, her boss, and, of course, Kit…and when they’re threatened, she’s there to do whatever she can to protect them in her own, bumbling, Earthling way.

The Sequel, Dragon in Chains, is a continuation of Kit and Miranda’s story, of what happens after the danger is past and a new and more dangerous threats looms. There’s a secret in Miranda’s past, also, one which will change her relationship with Kit more drastically than anything else that’s happened.

There’s more about Ceran Syndibus also. The vengeful Imperial officer of the law is out to get Kit and he’s sworn Miranda will be the key to bringing down the House of Andrus for good.

BLURB:

With the death of Xander Taluti, the Andrus clan attempts to return to peacetime.  Though Imperial Law has forbidden their marriage, Kitten Andrus openly declares his feelings for Miranda Wilson, but uncertain times lie ahead for the lovers.  Amid the joy of nephew Niki's long-awaited marriage to his adored Ardala, Dominic Andrus' plans to transform his family into law-abiding citizens is destroyed when Imperial Detective Synubis invades the House of Andrus and arrests Kit, Dom, and Niki, Taken into protective custody and separated from those she trusts, Miranda finds herself the Prosecution's chief witness and must summon every ounce of courage to enable her to brave an alien justice system where the truth will convict the man she loves of a crime he didn't commit and only a miracle--or a long-hidden secret--can save him....

EXCERPT:

“Kit! Kit! Open up!” Someone pounded on the bedroom door, violently and loudly.
“Damnation!” Kit released Miranda, leaned across her and hit the button unlocking the door. “What the hell is it?”
“Kit…” Niki nearly fell into the room.
“Niki, why the hell are you still here?”
Niki looked at Miranda, hesitated as she grasped the sheet and clutched it against her breasts, then went on breathlessly,  “Kit, the trogs, they’re in the House! That Lieutenant Synubis. He’s got warrants, Kit!”
“Does Dom know?” Kit was looking around frantically, trying to remember where he’d dropped his gun.
“Papa’s been arrested.” Niki broke off as the outer door burst open and four white-uniformed men rushed in. They were armed with short-barreled rifles.
Kit sat up, pushing Miranda behind him. Niki drew his gun.
“Niki, no!” The gun stopped in mid-aim, Niki freezing, obedient as a dog to the Master’s commands. “Never draw on an Imperial officer.”
“Very wise.” Lieutenant Synubis pushed through the men, pulled the gun from Niki’s grasp and handed it to one of them. “Dominic tas Andrus, by the power given to me as an officer of the Gataen Justice System, I hereby place you under arrest.”
Niki was surrounded, arms twisted behind his back. He was pulled into the hall. Miranda’s hands tightened on Kit’s shoulders. He leaned against her, his back cold against her breasts.
Synubis came toward the bed.
“Kitten Andrus.” His eyes flicked past Kit to Miranda, who raised her chin defiantly and looked through him. “I arrest you in the name of the Margrave.”
“You’ve never been able to make anything stick, Synubis,” Kit replied. “What’s the charge this time?”
“You’ll find out at your trial.” He made an impatient gesture toward the door. “Come with me.”
Throwing back the covers, Kit got out of the bed.  He stood looking down at the stocky policeman contemptuously, not in the least intimidated by being naked before a man who supposedly having the upper hand. “Do I get to dress first or am I to be taken to the Station like this?”
“If I had my way, you’d be dragged out of here in chains.” Kit’s refusal to react brought a violent response from Synubis. “Get dressed!” The lieutenant snapped. He gestured at the pile of clothes littering the floor, saying to one of the men, “Check those. Make sure he doesn’t have any weapons or poisons hidden in them.”
“Poisons?” Kit’s dark brows arched scornfully. “And cheat you of your triumph?” He shook his head. “Never!”
He sat down on the bed and dressed while Synubis stood impatiently in front of him, throwing Miranda an angry glance. She ignored him, her eyes on Kit.
When he stood up, one of the remaining uniformed men pulled his hands behind his back, slipping a set of clear rings onto his wrists. They widened elastically, went over his hands, then shrank, snugly adhering to each other as the man took a small control unit from his belt and pressed a button on it. Taking Kit’s arm, he led him away and Kit went with him, not speaking. He didn’t look back at Miranda.
Synubis walked over to the bed. “Miranda Wilson, will you come with me, please?”
“Am I under arrest, too?”
“Of course not. You’ve committed no crime.”
“Then, why…”
“I told you before, Sentira Wilson.” Synubis smiled and she didn’t like it at all. It held the vicious curve of a wolf’s fangs. “You’re going to help me bury the House of Andrus. You’re the Empire’s material witness.”

Dragon in Chains will be available from Class Act Books on August 15.

Welcome Pauline Allen

I want to welcome Pauline Allen to my blog.  I really enjoyed her answers.  Lots of inspiration.

Pauline Allan is a woman on a mission. Curvy girls of the world unite! She writes erotic romance for the ordinary woman who fantasizes about extraordinary possibilities. Pauline strives to make every reader feel sexy and desirable by the time they turn to the last page.

Hi Judi. Thank you for having me on your blog today. I look forward to chatting with you and your readers. I'm so excited to share some fun topics and discuss the interesting world of writing.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 things would you have with you?

-Oh goodness. I would definitely need these essentials for my island retreat. First the two obvious choices. I would need clean water. Food would consist of mac-n-cheese and potato soup. The third would probably be a journal and pen. I would need to record the inspiration the island provided. I would require a long range radio with plenty of batteries. I love music and would go crazy without some tunes. Last, but most certainly not least, I would need my muse. Marco Dapper would be the perfect addition to the secluded oasis. I believe with these essentials I would enjoy the peace and tranquility of a fantasy getaway.

What is your favorite way to relax after a hard day working and writing?

-I'm addicted to bubble baths. I have a rockin' set up to this routine. I put a movie in the laptop and place it on the vanity. I like to watch movies like 9 1/2 Weeks, Clue, Pretty in Pink, Shag: the Movie, Grease, and anything staring Marilyn Monroe. (By the way, Ms. Monroe was a genius comedic actor. She had great timing and a snarky side to her talent. Just wanted to point out that she was much more than a sex goddess of the screen.) A nice glass of raspberry wine is an added plus to the relaxing experience.

What is the one era you would love to go visit and why?

-I love the music of the Motown era. The idea of music going through such an exciting transformation is amazing to me. I think it would be so cool to ride around in a 1955 two-tone Chevy Bel Air convertible sports coup. (I'm a little addicted to that model. Can you tell?) I'd loved to have been shag dancing on the pier, shaking my pelvis like Elvis, hanging out with friends at the local diner, and sneaking records like Chuck Berry and Howlin' Wolf to parties. I like the idea of the diner with the counter where you can order meatloaf in the middle of the day and enjoy a real chocolate milk shake. I want to travel back to when things were simpler. People talked instead of texting and  laughed instead of Lol'ing. It was an exciting time of cultural change and the music was a universal way to bring people together.

Out of all your books, do you have a favorite one? If not, then which one is closest to your heart?

-Out of the books I've written I would have to say the one closest to my heart is Gilded Lily. I wrote that book when I was dealing with the grief of losing my grandmother. The book was a way for me to cope with what I was feeling. I also had a deep kinship with Tony. He was the secondary hero in the book and has an underlying darkness that he has to tackle. The book gives a glimpse into his torment. There will be a sequel to Lily's book that delves into Tony's character.  As for a favorite book that I didn't write, I'd have to narrow it down to two books. The erotic romance book would be Story of O by Pauline Reage and the contemporary fiction would be Precious and Fragile Things by Megan Hart. These two books left an emotional imprint on my life.

When you sit down to start a new book do you begin with an outline or synopsis or do you just go with the flow?

-I have a routine that takes place when I begin a new project. Research is key for me. I take time to study the aspects of my characters. For instance, the project I'm currently working on has led me to research the world of architecture. I enjoy this process and it helps me flesh out and get to know my characters. I then write down my character arcs and story arc on note cards to remember in which direction my characters and the story needs to grow. That's it for the structure of the story. I firmly believe my characters write themselves. They do things that surprise and excite me. I never know which direction my story is going to go, but I make sure the end result is a transformation of my hero and heroine.

How long does it take you to finish a book from start to finish?

-My goal is to put out two books a year. I feel the need to write complex characters and that takes time. From research to editor it takes me around three months. That may seem like a long time to many writers, but I like to pace myself so I can go back and revise. I typically write 130,000 word count and have to cut down to 75-95,000 words. That's a real mountain to climb. A good book has to marinate in the writer's mind and for me it takes that three months to put out a story I can be proud of.

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

-My books are emotionally draining. The content is very personal and takes me on a journey. The hardest part about this is the time it takes away from my family. I'm horrible at budgeting my time to balance writing and other priorities. When the muse hits I can't ignore her. I write in a frenzy and stream the ideas in my mind constantly. My thoughts get so full it's hard for me to process anything else.

Where do you dream of traveling and why?

-I want to see Italy! I dream of clear Mediterranean waters and beautiful sweeping landscapes. My background in college was religious history and I long to see the rich history of this area of the world. I want to sit in a small cafe and eat the amazing cuisine. The area is so exciting and would inspire me with endless romance. It doesn't hurt that I'm hopelessly attracted to hot Italian men!

Has a vacation trip ever inspired a book?

-Gilded Lily's setting was inspired by my love of the South. I use Louisiana as a go-to in my mind for set inspiration. I travel to New Orleans two to three times a year and soak up the slow pace and friendly atmosphere. The city is rich in American/French history that many writers find recharges their creative batteries and blooms complex and exciting stories. I'm no exception. Every time I visit the Crescent City a new story gets my thoughts churning with romantic scenarios.

Tell us about your characters in your latest/upcoming book. Are they inspired by anyone?

-Lily was inspired by an alter ego. I wanted to write about a persona embedded deep within myself. She's always lingered there and needed the right forum to emerge. Tony and Adam were inspired by my hot, handsome, sexy, drool-worthy muse. Mr. Marco Dapper is a model/actor that I've adored for years. He has the ability to look different in so many pictures. He always gets my blood pumping and ready to write desirable heroes.

Please tell us about you latest or upcoming book.

-Gilded Lily is a story set in the heart of Louisiana where the days linger and the nights are hot with mystery and eroticism. Lily is a woman whose life was spiraling out of control until the afternoon she met Tony. His Dominant ways changed her life forever. Tony trains submissives to accept who they are and celebrate their sexual nature. There's just one problem. Tony feels restless. He can't explain why his demons are creeping up now, but he has to run. Leaving Lily behind without someone who can see to her needs is not an option. Adam's brother, Nick, dies and the tragedy leads Adam to Lily's plantation house where Nick had rented a place on her property. Through exploration and sensual experiences Lily has to decide if she can take the chance on love or fight for the only Dominant she's ever known. Adam needs his flower, Tony needs to run, and Lily needs to discover her courage. The story takes each character down dark roads to discover redemption.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

-I really enjoy the story building. I love to be driving in my car and hear a piece of dialogue in my head or listening to my iPod and a line from a song inspires a whole book. Getting into the character's head and letting them lead the way is very exciting when constructing a story line.

List two authors we would find you reading when taking a break from your own writing.

-I love Charlotte Featherstone and Megan Hart. The books these gals put out are amazing. They create complex characters rich in description and depth.

Where can we find you on the web (website, Facebook, Twitter, others)?

Please share your cover and a blurb or short excerpt and a buy-link for your book.

Adam's ferocious sexual appetite for submission has left him frustrated and alone.  He turns to the photo in his wallet. The woman's full lips smile with laughter. The yellow sundress hugs her soft curves. The beautiful muse. His elusive flower.

Lily has a dark secret. A submissive without a Dominant, her life had derailed with grief, solitude, and rejection. Until a mysterious stranger's erotic education led to unfathomable pleasure.

Tony knew Lily's training would be his last attempt to escape the void in his life. An experienced Dom with the very nature of his control shaken, he has to run. There's one last responsibility to take care of before he can leave.

Lily, his once timid sub, is testing her boundaries and craves more. A love he can never give.

Tragedy leads Adam to Lily's plantation in Louisiana. While packing his brother's belongings, Tony offers the one precious thing Adam could never deny. The submission of his elusive flower.

The clock is ticking. Tony wants freedom. Adam demands total submission. Lily must choose. Does she cling to the safety of Tony's commands or risk the rejection of Adam's love?

Either way, a submissive's trust is a fragile thing. Once broken...it's lost forever.

Today's My Lucky Day

So, last night my friend, Donna, called to tell me Nordstrom Rack was opening and did we want to go.  That they would be raffling off $100 gift certificates.  The only drawback was that we needed to be at/near the Mall by 8:00 a.m.  Whatev . . .  I said, "Sure."

I set my alarm so I could wake up by 6:00 to pick her up by 7:30.  When we arrived, there was already a line, but they were offering breakfast snacks and coffee, so we had stamina for the wait.

Neither of us won on the first round.  Nor the big prize of $1,000.  But on the final round, they called my name.

Well, if Donna hadn't dragged me there, I never would have won.  So I split the gift card with her.  A few minutes later the doors opened and we shopped 'til we dropped -- $90 that is.

After that, the obligatory stop at Starbucks, then home.  All done by 10:00 a.m.

Oh, yeah, bought a PowerBall ticket, too.

Hope your day is as lucky.

A Surprising Connection Between NM and MEA Surprising Connection Between NM and ME

Woke up this morning to the usual sunny day, although it was a bit chilly.  This is my last day here in Albuquerque.

We decided it would be fun to go to the Balloon Museum

Albuquerque being the hot air ballooning capital of the world,  Has to do with the mountains ringing the city and the air currents.  The Rockies are to the west and the Sandia Mountains are on the east side of the city.

We started out with a photo op setting.

Here's my granddaughter flying solo.

And my son and I joining her

The museum has lots of great information about ballooning and some wonderful displays.  But the one most interesting to me was the Double Eagle II.  On August 11, 1978 the Double Eagle II ascended from Presque Isle, Maine and 137+ hours later laded outside of Paris, France (not Paris, Maine), close to where Charles Lindburgh landed, the first successful Atlantic crossing in a hot air balloon.

If you look carefully, on the side you might be able to read Albuquerque and Maine.  There's also a Maine state flag hanging nearby.

I tried to get the whole of the gondola and balloon in, but the extended balloon was too high.

We ended our excursion at the Owl Café, famous for their green chili burgers and awesome milk shakes.

Flying home tomorrow and looking forward to 20 inches of snow on my back deck.  Not!
